HOW CAN THERAPY IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH & RELATIONSHIPS?Neuroscience backed cognitive behavioral interventions offer the life changing pause between thought, feeling and behavior that will improve your ability to respond to life's stressors and relationship triggers with a calm nervous system and the emotional intelligence you yearn for. Longer-term Psychodynamic, insight-oriented therapy offers you the large scale context and illuminates the unconscious motivations for your painful interpersonal struggles. The triggers as well as your reactions likely stem from both met and unmet needs from your family of origin. Once understood, these patterns can change so you can show up in your relationships in a more intentional way. We also incorporate the most brilliant and therapeutic elements of Mindfulness, Couples' Techniques from John & Julie Gottman and Terry Real, and the Enneagram. Get ready for the professional guidance you deserve to roll out the emotional red carpet one step ahead of where you would like grow. It's never too late to do your own work. Future you, as well as everyone else in your life will thank you.

About Me

After receiving my MA in 2002, and then later my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2005 from the American Schools of Professional Psychology in the San Francisco Bay Area, I pursued my post-doctoral training and expertise in a variety of clinical settings.I worked in Community Mental Health in San Francisco, the AIDS Health Project at UCSF, as well as University Counseling Centers such as Stanford University and University of San Francisco. After getting married and moving back home to Minnesota, I completed my post-doctoral work at Augsburg University Counseling Center, the Hamm Clinic, and met my future best friend and pod-spouse, Doug Jensen, LICSW, BCD when he hired me into his Group Private Practice, the River City Clinic in St Paul.In 2006, I was licensed and started in my own Private Practice. Almost 20 years later, I have a bustling private practice, am 2 years into podcasting with Doug Jensen, and am so excited about this new chapter in my career; training, guiding and supervising top of the line pre-licensed mental health interns. If you are lucky enough to see Beth Fraley or Mary Zarling as a therapist, you will be receiving the highest level of care.My hands-on training approach includes intensive clinical education and supervision.Your customized therapy experience will be guided by:* A PSYCHODYNAMIC APPROACH:
This developmental perspective emphasizes the importance of your family of origin, as early childhood relationships tend to give you a blueprint of how life and relationships work. We also develop our way of being in the world based on what has been expected of us, what we have determined we can expect from others, how we’re supposed to regulate ourselves, and what feels acceptable and necessary to us in relationships and what is not. This blueprint is something that you will carry with you for the rest of your life.
This deep understanding of human nature also encompasses what motivates us, what success and failure looks like to us, our attachment styles, common obstacles in the way of our healing as well as how to improve relationship dynamics & communication skills.* COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL PRINCIPLES:
Thought & Behavior change will help your journey observing and leaving behind thought patterns and world views that no longer serve you, and move into more compassionate introspection which is the birth place of the change you are longing for in your life but can't quite name.
*MINDFULNESS TECHNIQUES:
Mindfulness is an approach that helps ground you in the moment and allow acceptance of reality while quieting your busy mind and calming your nervous system, decreasing anxiety, depression, stress and even insomnia.
*SUPPLEMENTAL EXPRESSIVE ART THERAPY
Beth Fraley has additional graduate trining in Expressive Art Therapy from the Adler Graduate School to supplement your work together if creative expression might be helpful in your personal work.

WE'RE NOT FINE, THE PODCAST WHERE MENTAL HEALTH MEETS RELATIONSHIPS.

In 2022, my dear friend, colleague and mentor Doug Jensen, LICSW asked me if I wanted to start a podcast with him. He had hired me to be a therapist in his group private practice, the River City Clinic, 20 years ago, and we have been closely connected ever since, so... of course I said yes!We are both incredibly passionate about making conversations about relationships and mental health accessible to everyone. With a combined 50 years of clinical experience and 20 years of a very special connection, we drop new episodes every Tuesday. We have several formats; guest experts, guests sharing personal stories of mental health and relationship struggles, psycho-education, self-development and couples' therapy recommendations, Mail Bag episodes, and LIVE recorded episodes with amazing guests at the Rogue Buddha Gallery in NE Minneapolis. Check out our episodes here!

CURIOUS ABOUT THE ILLUSTRIOUS ENNEAGRAM PERSONALITY PROFILING SYSTEM?Our Enneagram Workshop at @yogagardenmpls was a blast! The Enneagram is a framework of understanding personality structures rooted in both nature and nurture. It is a gateway to self-awareness and an understanding of others that opens up a path for us to experience a more integrated and rewarding life.
Knowing our Enneagram Type helps us uncover our unique drivers, motivators, fears and unmet childhood messages, which brings into sharp, clear focus nine different ways of looking at the world.
It allows us to see how each worldview impacts the way we bring our unique thoughts, feelings, an behaviors to any situation. Even beyond behavior, the Enneagram delves into the often-secret, unconscious, or underlying motivations that give us a look at 'why' people do what they do.The Enneagram emphasizes that we are all different and have different motivators. And to discover what motivates us, it is crucial to find the right balance between extrinsic and intrinsic motivators so we can motivate and energize ourselves (and others) successfully. These one-word descriptors can be expanded into four-word sets of traits. Keep in mind that these are merely highlights and do not represent the full spectrum of each type.Type #1 is principled, purposeful, self-controlled, and perfectionistic.
Type #2 is generous, demonstrative, people-pleasing, and possessive.
Type #3 is adaptable, excelling, driven, and image-conscious.
Type #4 is expressive, dramatic, self-absorbed, and temperamental.
Type #5 is perceptive, innovative, secretive, and isolated.
Type #6 is engaging, responsible, anxious, and suspicious.
Type #7 is spontaneous, versatile, acquisitive, and scattered.
Type #8 is self-confident, decisive, willful, and confrontational.
Type #9 is receptive, reassuring, complacent, and resigned
Join Dr. Talia Jackson, Licensed Psychologist and Clinical Mental Health Interns Beth Fraley, LADC and Mary Zarling, to learn how your enneagram type unveils your unique, intrinsic motivators to help stay on track!

THE MIND-BODY CONNECTIONMental health issues, depression, anxiety, and trauma can manifest physically and show up in the body.Research shows that those diagnosed with autoimmune disorders, chronic pain and fatigue often have a history of trauma. Our emotional lives and physical wellness are intertwined in our chronic stress, our burn out, grief and loss of a loved one, and in the loss of our functioning and identity as an athlete, as able bodied, as youthful.Therapy can help those of us with physical illness, chronic pain, and disabilities by encouraging us to trust our inner knowing of our symptoms with confidence, helping learn language around self-advocacy in the health care system and helping to create an empowered narrative. What can we do? What can we control? Learning mindfulness techniques and coping strategies can “right size” our experiences of pain and discomfort.
